Representation |
Reapportionment |
In the House of Representatives the number of Representatives per states is based solely on the population of each state. Every state is guaranteed at least one representative. For example: Wyoming has a population of 576,412 ,which is the smallest population in the U.S, therefore it has one state representative. California on the other hand has a population of about 38 million so it has 58 state representatives.
In the Senate there are precisely 100 senators. The senate is not divided by the population count; simply every state gets two senators. |
Reapportionment is when the House of Representatives re-distributes the representatives to the 50 states. Reapportionment happens every ten years after the decennial census. The House of Representatives is only allowed to have 435 representatives total; during reapportionment some states gain representatives which mean some states have to lose representatives.
